Styling Curly Or Wavy Hair
So, what is the best way to style curly hair keeping it natural, without it looking to crunchy? This is a very long question because it depends on the texture and thickness of your hair. For instance, your hair may be fine and have a little wave in which you want to make into a stronger curl. Or you may have the opposite situation you may have very thick course hair and may want to weigh down your hair and relax the curl a little. There is one thing for sure. There is no one size fits all method for styling curly hair, it’s more of a trial effort to work out what suits YOUR hair the best.

There is no one size fits all method for styling curly hair, it’s more of a trial effort to work out what suits YOUR hair the best. Loads of articles refer to the “Curly Girl Method” and this is great, however it started in America where there is a lot of Afro and Latino heads of hair which require vastly different products then finer heads of hair. A professional recommendation is always best.

1) Let’s start with washing your hair. Choose the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. A professional recommendation is always best.

2) Always comb your conditioner through in the shower to detangle your hair.

3) When towel drying your hair try not to rough up your hair too much, this will create frizz. Best practice is wrapping up your hair in a turban and taking out the wetness this way.

4) Squeeze the prescribed product through your hair starting at the ends and working towards your roots. Try not to disrupt your natural texture by shaking or combing the product through.

5) Let your hair dry naturally, with no shaking!

6) If you are in a hurry or want to create some fullness, use a diffuser and hold your head upside down. Remember no shaking your hair!

7) You may also want to dry your fringe to make it sit right, but remember keep the rest of your hair in it’s natural chunks.

8) One your hair is totally dry (yes 100%) you can shake your curls or waves to separate them.

9) This is the time when you can use a bounce back spray or nourishing paste, again depending on your hair type, to finish your look.

The key points to remember are combing your hair after getting out of the shower will slacken loose waves and make them straight and will frizz curls by separating them into hundreds of fluffy curls not chunky soft curls like we want. Don’t play with it too much as this will cause frizz. Finally, get a professional recommendation on products as there are so many out there for curly/ wavy hair and it’s not a 1 size fits all situation.
